Press play –– Copenhagen interview on why the collection was designed
A contemplative collection on climate change and melting glaciers could only be unveiled in Copenhagen ––
An invitation to an art opening in 2017 blew my mind. I love going to the art galleries in Chelsea to be inspired by new artists, but this opening was different. It was important, and it struck a deep chord.
The opening artist, Justin Brice Guariglia, had flown with the NASA research team over Greenland, documenting the melting of the ancient, enormous glaciers there, shooting colossal otherworldly landscapes from the plane. These images, hauntingly beautiful, were displayed on 20-foot tall canvases, which brought climate change to life. I knew that the world was slowly warming, and our ice caps were melting, but this opening hit me like a gut-punch — it was agonizing to see what was happening, what we were doing to our planet.
My design partner and I met the artist that night, and said we’d love to collaborate to help spread the message. The collection evolved to become a war cry for climate consciousness; We were invited to debut it with an installation during Copenhagen Fashion Week. More than 23,000 people experienced the exhibition –– a combination of videos, garments, and a melting obelisk of ice –– over three days.
‘Hyperobject’ debuted in Copenhagen for Spring/Summer 2018, in partnership with Justin Brice Guariglia and CIFF
